Before you begin searching for the perfect oak coffee table, take a moment to read this article to find out a little bit about the origins and history of the coffee table so you can appreciate this wonderful piece of furniture which millions of people enjoy in their homes every day.

A coffee table is sometimes also referred to as a cocktail table and it was designed and created to sit in front of the couch to hold any drinks that you might bring into the lounge, the term ‘gather around the coffee table’ was derived from this particular piece of furniture and it has helped to encourage conversations between millions of people since it was first designed. There are many different styles and types of coffee tables available, but the most common design is made low and quite long and sometimes has cabinets incorporated underneath it to hold small items such as magazines. But where did the first coffee table comes from? It seems that this piece of furniture has always been in our lives, many of us as toddlers would often bump our heads on our mom’s favourite coffee table in the lounge- but when did the coffee table first begin being used and by whom?

The first coffee table was designed in Europe and made in Britain around the time of the late Victorian era. Before this time tables used in Europe designed to be used around the couch included end tables, tea tables and centre tables but by 1780, high backed couches began to be replaced by lower backed designs which encouraged the development of sofa tables or coffee tables which would stand against the back of the couch and would be used to place a book or a cup onto it. The earliest documented coffee table was one which was designed by E W Godwin back in 1868 and was then recreated in large quantities by William Watt; this was one of the earliest coffee tables made in Europe. A little bit later, coffee tables were then designed to be low tables and from late 19th century many of the styles of coffee tables reflected revivalism such as Louis XVI and Georgian style coffee tables.
